A Guide For Student Advocates
You know the student who's clearly working past the assignment — writing the draft in the margins of their notebook, building the project on their own time, making work that doesn't fit into a rubric. They're usually working inside a classroom that isn't built to hold it, or on their own. The Studio is a third space — an online studio for high schoolers with something to make. Small cohorts. Regular feedback. Deadlines. A guide who knows the work well enough to ask better questions. Below is a quick look at what each program offers, who it's for, and how to connect with me directly if you have a specific student in mind.
I know what it looks like from both sides — in the classroom as a high school and college writing instructor, and in the committee room as a former Director of Admissions for The University of the Arts and a recent outside reader for George Washington University. More about Kate →
THE WORKSHOP
8 weeks, live on Zoom, personal essay writing
For the student who writes but hasn't yet found what they actually want to say. This is writing-as-thinking, not a traditional “college essay prep” program — though the structural alignment with a strong college application essay is real.
Send if: writes, but wants to find their voice.
Sept 15–Nov 3
Tues 4–5pm ET
$700 Founding Cohort
$850 Standard (starting Spring ’27)
THE AUDIT
Async, single review, 7-business-day turnaround
A diagnostic read of a student's full application materials — the way an admissions committee reads them. Not line-editing or proofreading, but a targeted read on voice and alignment: do the pieces complement each other, and do they add up to who this student actually is?
Send if: materials drafted, needs an outside read on voice and narrative alignment.
Available
Aug 1–Dec 1
$650 Founding Rate
$750 Standard (starting Sept 8, 2026)
THE RESIDENCY
10 weeks, live on Zoom, creative project studio
For the student who already has a project in mind — a hybrid essay, a documentary short, an audio narrative, a zine — and needs structure and a real creative community to actually finish it.
Send if: has a project, but wants the guidance and structure to build it.
Spring 2027
Exact dates TBA
$1,300 Founding Rate
